Samana
Samana
SAMANA The history of this province is not impressive like other regions of the country with extraordinary heroes or glorious battles.
Here people are simple and challenge the requirements that daily life provides and know how to cope with life.
The peninsula is located in the northeast of the country and has a bay that is a strategic military space that was the greed in the 19th century of the European colonial powers and in the 20th of the United States.
When Christopher Columbus arrived on his first trip in 1492 he discovered evidence of an indigenous settlement. This portion of land belonged to the Maguá cacicazgo. Guarionex was the leader of the Taínos who were very peace-loving. Samana's name is probably of the Indian language. The Tainos called the Xamaná area.
This place was hiding place of famous pirates. Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard and John Rackam, known as Calico Jack, often accompanied by two famous pirate women Anne Bonny and Mary Read, visited this peninsula.
The pirate Cofresí in Puerto Rico also hid here. His favorite hiding place was the area now Los Haitises National Park, with its many caves.
The founding date of this town is 1756 when immigrants from the Canary Islands settled. His main activity was fishing.
During the French period in Haiti (1795-1814), several sugar barons moved from the west of the island of Hispaniola to that area. Napoleon planned that Santa Barbara de Samaná be a strategic center of the French West Indies.
When Samana was founded in 1756 by immigrants from the Canary Islands, it was a fishing village.
In 1820, many freed slaves settled here and two years later when the Haitian occupation of 1822 Haitian President Jean Pierre Boyer sent Haitian families and some 200 former American slaves. Many of them returned to the US and some remained, preserving their language and traditions.
Pearl of the Caribbean
The bay of Samana was called Pearl of the Caribbean for its beaches and heavenly places. In the month of February of each year the sighting of humpback whales that come from the North Atlantic for mating, attract hundreds of tourists who delight in their performances during boat trips. But outside the consideration of nature and animals, this province has paradisiacal places to which thousands of European and American tourists come. We must mention the beaches of Rincon, Las Galeras, with extraordinary natural conditions, Bonita, Cosón and Las Ballenas in Las Terrenas. It also has the beaches of Morón, Limón, El Valle and del Ermitaño, among others.
It has an atoll called Cayo Levantado, in the bay of Samana with a unique beauty. It has lush vegetation with beautiful beaches.
Among other attractions, we must highlight the waterfall of El Limón, which has a beautiful natural pool.
Without a doubt, due to its natural conditions, this province will contribute greatly to the goal of 10 million tourists a year.
