Cabarete
Cabarete
Cabarete is a municipal district of the Municipality of Sosúa of the province of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, known for its tourism and its beaches. It was founded in 1835 by Zephaniah Kingsley (as part of his Mayooka heritage of Koka), along with his mixed-race family, and 53 slaves whom he would have freed from his Florida plantations, while Hispaniola Island was under Haitian rule. Anna Kingsley owned a house in the harbor that stretched to the sea. Several descendants of the Kingsleys and former slaves currently live in this area.
It is a small bohemian town on the north coast that is characterized by its youthful atmosphere and diversity of entertainment activities with a population of 14,606 inhabitants according to the National Statistics Office (ONE) of 2010. Its main locations are: Callejón De La Loma and El Choco, Sector La Paz, Islabon, La Catalina, Barrio Blanco, Bombita and La Rinconada.
Cabarete Bay has been the venue for professional kitesurfing competitions (for example, "World Cup" and "Master of the Ocean" http://www.masteroftheocean.com/, which is an international, unique elite sporting event in the world, to understand the four disciplines of surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and paddleboarding). Encuentro Beach (3 miles west) is among the most popular surf beaches in the Caribbean. The city is every year host of important tests in these sports.
Cabarete is a tourist area that combines mountains, lagoons and white sand beaches, is located on Camino Cinco, approximately 11 miles (18 km) from the Puerto Plata airport. The area in which it is located has a large number of condominiums, apart-hotels, hotels, hostels for all budgets, shops, gift shops, bars, discos and numerous restaurants.
It is one of the Dominican tourist areas with the greatest international projection and one of the greatest development potential. But Cabarete offers much more than beach. Among other attractions is the Natural Monument Lagunas de Cabarete and Goleta where Lagunas and Cuevas stand out with their biodiversity of fauna and flora. This is a tropical caro system located between the hills of the Northern Cordillera and the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors can observe the exotic biodiversity of the Caribbean in its varied routes between dolinas, mogotes, mangroves, swamps and tropical jungle. There is also time to learn about the variety of tropical fruits and medicinal plants.

Culture and history info
Cabarete's history is deeply linked to the history of the Dominican Republic, the history of Spain and the evolution of the Caribbean to the present day, as a world tourist destination.
We began our journey through the history of Cabarete with the Taínos, aborigines who first populated this island, came from the mouth of the Orinoco River, in Venezuela, and were the first settlers of the archipelago and the current Dominican Republic. The Taínos were a modest and peaceful people who dedicated themselves to agriculture, fishing and livestock. His religion was polytheistic.
In 1492 the story takes an important turn with the discovery of America by Columbus and his three vessels, the Pinta, the Girl and the Santa Maria disembark in the Caribbean in 1492, on December 5 on this Island whose first name was La Spanish.
After this landing, the natives were converted to the Catholic faith, and little by little the church was founding its first temples, then moments of instability came, in the 16th century especially with pirate attacks that were ruining the island, one of the most pirates incisors with the island was Francis Drake, one of the most important British pirates known.
The Island passed into the hands of the French and in 1805, dependent on Haiti, achieved its independence, then it was invaded by the Americans, but before, the Dominican Republic had already achieved its independence from Haiti during the 19th century.
Currently, the Dominican Republic is a small Caribbean country that has its main livelihood in tourism, although other sectors such as agriculture with the exploitation of sugar cane are also standing out.
